Om Namo Narayanaya Mantra Protects

Hiranyakashipue, the father of Vishnu's great devotee Pralad, wanted his son, Pralad killed! Hiloka, the sister of Hiranyakakashipue, took the shawl which was given her by Brahma and that had the power that if she wore it, she couldn't be burned by fire. She went to her brother and said, 'Dear Brother, you know very well that I am blessed by this shawl so that I can't get burned. I will take your son and I will sit on a pile of wood with him. Then you ask your people to light a fire there. Like this, he will get burned, but I won't because I can't get burned.' Saying that, they made a big pile of wood and Holika took Pralad on her lap.

Every boon, though, when it's given is not for destroying others. It's always for helping others. If you think of destroying others, you will destroy yourself. Holika thought that she was doing something good when she took Pralad on her lap and sat on the fire. As the fire was burning, Bhakta Pralad was always chanting "Om Namo Narayanaya" and his mind was always focused on Narayana. The shawl turned over and covered Pralad and Holika got burned. That's why around February or March we have the Holika Dahan, which is the ritual bonfire burning of Holika. The festival Holi comes from that.
